Think of your wiki as a chalkboard where you and your students may write anything they want. The information is editable.
The goal is for them to collaborate on any given topic. For this module, we will focus on uses for a social studies class. Explore this example: http://whywereslavestraded.wikispaces.com/
Managing the Wiki:
You are the creator of the wiki and the sole manager. Student Members of the wiki can contribute, but you make major changes and monitor all of the wiki. At the top of the wiki, you will notice the red toolbar like this:
The first button, "Wiki Home" allows you to view the actual read only wiki. It can be one big page or have several pages like the example does. On each page, you and your students must click on "edit" to be able to edit any content. You can add text, photographs, videos, PowerPoints, links, etc to enhance the content.
The "Pages and Files" button allows you to add or remove pages and files. Here you will also edit page names when needed.
"Members" lets you accept your students as members of the class wiki. You can also message them and see the number of contributions each student has made.
Don't be nervous about students entering inappropriate content! You will have control as you are the creator and will only allow students to contribute to the content. They will have to login and their actions will be recorded. You know everything a student has done and may add or remove content as you see fit. As a bonus, you can see the frequency of student participation and the quality of their contribution. When you click on "Recent Changes", you will see every move and see the student member that contributed it. The record looks like this:
"Manage Wiki" has some of the same functions as above, but this is where you may change the look and layout of your wiki. You may manage content, people, and tools from this button.
